| Introduction
Triathlon BC is pleased to present
the "2002 New Balance Provincial
Triathlon Race Series". The Series will consist of 11 races, and athletes must complete (officially finish) at least three of
these races - including one of standard (Olympic) distance or greater distance,
to qualify for Series awards. In addition for 2002, there is a Duathlon
Race Series consisting of five events - click here
for more information.
Some of the guiding principles used to
select races for the series are:
- Past track records of events -
safety, organization, sanctioning, etc.
- Distribution of dates over entire
race calendar (i.e., March to September).
- Representation of races in different
geographic regions (i.e., Interior, Kootenays, Lower Mainland, Vancouver
Island)
- Representation of different race
distances (Sprint, Standard/Olympic, 1/2 Ironman).
Sponsorship
Triathlon BC has secured sponsorship
for the 2002 race series. This sponsorship will aid us in our mission to
provide the members of our association with an exciting, challenging, safe,
and enjoyable set of events to compete in. Specifically, this sponsorship
will enable us to provide excellent awards and prizes to the age group,
junior and elite athletes that complete the series.

Rules
It is required/recommended that all
competitors in the series review the race series rules. The key rules are
outlined below.
-
Must complete 3 of the 11 races
-
One race must be of Olympic/Standard
Distance or longer
-
Must be a Tri-BC member to qualify for
series prizes or awards
-
Elite series prize money of: $500, $400,
$300, $200, $100 for both male and female divisions - must hold a Tri-BC elite card to be eligible;
note there are residency restrictions to receive a Tri-BC elite card (i.e.,
permanent residence in BC, etc.)
-
Every series finisher (i.e., the 3 races
of appropriate distance are completed) will receive a series finishers
award
-
Age groups are determined by each 5
year boundary
-
Scoring system - please check any inconsistencies
in the results and report to Tri-BC
-
The UBC race will award no points but will count
towards the count of the three races required to be completed; the rationale for
this is there are three distances at UBC, namely, super-sprint, sprint and
Olympic distance so scoring between the races is not possible.
-
If an age group athlete (excluding elites) officiates (must be Tri-BC certified
official i.e., taken officiating course) officiates at another Tri-BC sanctioned
event, then the lowest points event of the three races completed will be dropped
and the highest points event completed will be counted twice towards the series
score for the athlete. This is mostly as an incentive to take the
officials course and to officiate at a race.
Some of the objectives of the race series are
to:
(1) Promote participation in the sport of
Triathlon throughout BC.
(2) Evenly distribute races in BC where their is a number of established
events, these areas are:
- Vancouver Island (3 races)
- Okanogan (3 races)
- Kootenays (2 races)
- Lower Mainland (3 races)
(3) Include races in the series that have a
good track with Triathlon BC in terms of
sanctioning related items including safety, permits, organization, community/club
support, volunteer support, etc.
(4) Awards every series finisher.
(5) Encourage and provide opportunities to develop elite, espoir and
junior athletes.
(6) Provide a fair scoring system that attempts to address issues such as:
- handles strong fields
- handles weak fields
- provides a comparative scoring between each
event
- can be adjusted for severe weather
conditions
- handles any race distance
- can calculate scores at five year
increments
