Hot off the press, the 2012 Race Sanction Package has received a comprehensive vetting by our Officials and Sanction Committees to better meet risk reduction guidelines. As a result, shortforms are not available in 2012. This means that all Race Directors, regardless of organizing history, must submit the new for 2012 Sanction Package as a baseline document.

KELOWNA SPORT HERO ANNOUNCED
PacificSport and the City of Kelowna have awarded Richard Montgomery with the 2012 Community Sport Hero Award.
Richard Montgomery became President of the Kelowna Apple Triathlon Organizing Committee in 2001. Richard and his Committee work hard, learn from each other, and produce a successful race each year. The Kelowna Apple Triathlon has been graced with athletic greats, including Olympic medalist Simon Whitfield, and has been internationally recognized since 2005.
The reception for this award will take place on Thursday February 2nd, 2012 at the Mary Irwin Theatre in Kelowna. Along with the recognition of local sport heroes, the 2012 Community Sport Hero Awards Reception will take time to “send-off” the athletes & coaches heading to the 2012 BC Winter Games (Vernon, BC) and celebrate the upcoming 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games in London.

RTC VICTORIA ANNOUNCES SPRING TRAINING CAMP DATES
Get the jump start on a competitive triathlon season with the RTC-Victoria's 5-day Spring Training Camp, March 18 - 23. Hosted by Coach Kelly Guest, the Camp is aimed at high performance youth aged 15 to 18, and covers the essentials of high performance training, including swim/bike/run technical analysis, dryland training and (phew!) a discussion around tactical and psychological preparation.

4th ANNUAL BRIDGING THE GAP CONFERENCE, JANUARY 28 & 29, 2012
Triathlon BC, in conjunction with Triathlon Canada, is hosting the 4th Annual Bridging the Gap Conference, January 28 & 29. Aimed specifically at Coaches that interact with young athletes, the two-day Victoria-based Conference will address 'Balance & Injury Prevention, through Mind, Body, Soul' and help to craft life habits to ensure future athletic success.
Special guests include high level researchers from the University of Calgary and UBC, presenting ground breaking information on motivation, psychology and sport injury. Topics will also include LTAD (volume, intensity, progression), periodization and examine sport nutrition requirements for young athletes.
A travel subsidy of $75 is available for TriBC member coaches traveling from zones 1, 2, 7 & 8.
YOUTH CLINIC IS VISITS TERRACE, JANUARY 14, 2012:
Triathlon BC is hosting a FREE introductory Youth Clinic lead by certified coaches and aimed at elementary and high school-aged youth. With an emphasis on bringing FUN into the three sports of triathlon - swimming, cycling and running - this 5-hour Clinic teaches kids about the lifetime sport of triathlon, while instilling the development of physical activity skills that will carry over into adulthood. As an added bonus, youth Clinic participants will automatically receive a free (2012) membership with Triathlon BC. The Youth Clinic runs from 9:00am through to 2:30pm, and is hosted out of the Terrace Aquatic Centre.

HOSTING BC GRANT APPLICATION - DEADLINE DECEMBER 15, 2011
The Hosting BC program provides funding for event operational expenses in order to help facilitate sport, economic and community development across the province.
International, National, Western Canadian, Provincial and Regional level sport events are eligible to apply. Events must be sanctioned by Triathlon BC or Triathlon Canada, and support the Canadian Sport for Life plan. The focus for this intake is for events taking place from March to December 2012. Full eligibility details are available in the Program Guidelines posted below.
Applications for this intake will be accepted until 4:00pm December 15, 2011. The complete guidelines and application overview are attached and are available on the BC Games Society website and Hosting BC website.

Triathlon Canada seeking bids to host National-level multi-sport events. Bids will close December 15, 2011. Single and multi-year bids (up to 3 years) will be accepted. For more information, please click the link below.
Please note: significant modifications have been made to these documents. For this reason, all the documents are presently in DRAFT format as they have not been officially passed by the Triathlon Canada Board of Directors. Some adjustments may be made to these documents before they become official. Should any changes be made, all PSGBs will be notified immediately after the next Board meeting. In the best interest of receiving bids and awarding events in a timely manner, Triathlon Canada thought it best to release these documents in a draft state.

HIGH PERFORMANCE ATHLETE ASSISTANCE GRANT
High-performance athlete assistance grants are available for
amateur athletes of Aboriginal ancestry, including Aboriginal athletes
with a disability, who require financial assistance in their pursuit of
sport excellence. The amount of individual grants varies according to

XTERRA WHISTLER UPDATE
Due to unfortunate circumstances, the XTerra Whistler Triathlon is not a sanctioned Triathlon BC event in 2011. Race Officials will not be in attendance. We have been informed that the event has appropriate insurance in place.
MARY LELIVELD BURSARY FUND
Mary Leliveld loved amateur athletics. She was a competitive runner, cyclist, triathlete who competed for Canada on the Canadian National Triathlon team at the World Triathlon Championships in 2001, 2003 and 2004. In addition to being a top age group athlete, she inspired others to achieve their dreams through sport.
One of the ways her friends and family hope to honor Mary's life is with a bursary fund. The directive of the Mary Leliveld Fund is to support deserving athletes travel to competitions they otherwise might not be able to participate in. To learn more about the Fund, please click HERE.
LOCAL SPORT DEVELOPMENT FUNDING NOW AVAILABLE
Applications are now being accepted to help local sport organizations increase sport opportunities for BC athletes of all ages and abilities. The targeted grant provides funding up to $2,000 for programs that aim to increase sport participation, this could include opportunities such as clubs establishing a youth division; a sport program that requires coach training; or a club that wants to introduce their sport to local schools.
BC SPORT SCHOOLS GEAR UP FOR STUDENTS
High performance student athletes in Victoria and Kelowna now have the chance to split their school day between academics and training – giving them a competitive edge – thanks to an investment in two pilot sport schools established by CSC Pacific and PacificSport Okanagan. Every student will have a personalized learning and training plan that includes courses in sport and human performance, personal tutoring, as well as time to train, study and compete. WESTERN CANADA SUMMER GAMES FINAL DAY OF COMPETITION 4:
Tuesday was the final day of competition in Triathlon, featuring the much anticipated relay. The BC Team’s Maya Munzar (swim) tagged off to Hilary Wille (bike) quickly making up ground for runner Megan Kinghorn, who went on to secure another GOLD! Meanwhile, the Men’s squad battled with Manitoba. Victoria’s Jordan Kinghorn (swim) kicked things off, handing over to Connor Foreman (bike), who would tag Lehm Maguire (run). The BC Team men had a fantastic race, securing SILVER!
GOLD MINING AT THE WESTERN CANADA SUMMER GAMES 3:
Double gold for BC as they capture first place in the men's and women's Triathlon Team Relay! "The goal was to win by a gap and go hard from start to finish," said coach and former Olympian and BC Team Coach, Carolyn Murray.

Not to be outdone, the men set a record of their own, with Lehm Maguire and Connor Foreman, BC Team racers, winning Gold and Silver respectively in the sprint final. Our hats are off to the athletes and support staff, well done!

Hilary Wille made history winning Team BC's first Gold medal of the Games, and winning the first ever Gold medal won by the sport in the Games! Her teammate, Megan Kinghorn (Victoria), won the Bronze medal.

OFFICIALS COURSE IN PENTICTON AUGUST 13TH
Triathlon BC is visiting Penticton, and we want YOU to be part of our FREE, 4 hour Officials Clinic, August 13th based on participant availability. Learn about the fundamental rules of triathlon and how to interpret the regulations (what do you mean, I'm too close to the person in front of me? How was I supposed to know that?)
This course, while prerequisite to becoming an Official, is also a great introduction to the rules of the sport for both new participants, and a refresher for those who have been racing for years. Please note, all Officials must be current members of Triathlon BC whenever Officiating at a sanctioned event. We require a minimum of 4 participants registered 5 days prior to the date specified.
TRIATHLON CANADA UNVEILS TWO NEW INITIATIVES
The “Defend Your Podium Title” (DYPT) Program and the National Champions Bonus are two new initiatives being introduced by Triathlon Canada. The "Defend Your Podium Title" program allows for podium finishers of the 2011 ITU Age Group World Championships to be eligible for benefits to assist in repeating their performance in 2012. The "Defend Your Podium Title" program is open to only Age Group athletes.

VICTORIA YOUTH TRIATHLON CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF SUCCESS
In 2011, the Victoria Youth Triathlon will celebrate a very special milestone, 25 years of racing! Accommodating close to 250 young racers annually, the Victoria Youth Triathlon has become a staple event in the community. Catering to athletes from 6 to 16 years of age, the starts at the McKinnon Pool, uses Ring Road for the cycling route and finishes along the chip trails of UVIC. An annual award which recognizing commitment to the BC Summer Games and the development of sport in a ‘progressive, dynamic and professional approach’, the Wendy Beaudry Sport Achievement Award not only recognizes best practices in sport delivery, but also remembers Wendy Beaudry, the BC Games Society Co-Chair that lost her life in a senseless act of violence in April, 2009.

MARC DUNCAN FUND
Marc was a troubled BC teen who was taken under the wing of a BC couple and introduced to triathlon. He became an outstanding junior triathlete who represented Canada at the 1991 World Triathlon Championships in Australia. Tragically, he was killed in a house fire two years later. His coach and mentor, Todd Clark, along with many of his training partners and friends asked TriBC to establish a fund in his name to assist other junior athletes in financial need to meet their sport goals.

TRIATHLON CANADA ANNOUNCES OFFICIAL 2010 HANDLEBAR RULE MODIFICATION
"For 2010, the ITU will not be enforcing rule 5.2.c)(iii) with respect to handlebars in draft illegal races. The rule is under review and any modifications will be announced prior to the 2011 season. For events in 2010, rule 5.2.c)(iii) will be replaced by the following:
Only handlebars and clip-on bars not extending beyond the leading edge of the front wheel will be permitted. All handlebar ends must be plugged. This new rule will be in effect immediately. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused."

MARY LELIVELD BURSARY
Mary Leliveld loved amateur athletics. She was a competitive runner, cyclist, triathlete who competed for Canada on the Canadian National Triathlon team at the World Triathlon Championships in 2001, 2003 and 2004. In addition to being a top age group athlete, she inspired others to achieve their dreams through sport.

Two BC teens arrived in Singapore on Monday hungry to make history at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, August 14-26, 2010. Christine Ridenour, of Cowichan Bay and Brook Powell, of Chilliwack, will be among 3,600 of the world’s best young athletes aged 14-18 to compete in 26 sports at the Games
