At the peak of Niagara’s boldest summer yet, more than 5,000 young athletes and their coaches will gather to compete for the podium in Canada’s largest multi-sport event. On its road to glory, this shining generation of hopefuls will leave its mark on our community and on the country – transforming, inspiring, and unifying us all through the power of sport.
From August 6th to 21st, 2021, Niagara will surge stronger than ever on the national stage. The Games will give rise to a new legacy of ambition, confidence, and compassion that will inspire generations to come.
Canada has a proud history in the sport of triathlon, growing the first provincial, national, and international governing bodies for the sport. First taking place at the Canada Summer Games in 2009, the sport of triathlon will be held at the Welland International Flatwater Centre, during the first week of the Games, August 5th through to 14th, 2021. Eligibility restrictions are aligned to the “Train to Compete” phase of the sport’s Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD), or other suitable phase of LTAD, as justified by the National
Sport Organization and approved by the Canada Games Council (CGC).
Eligibility restrictions pertain only to the sport in question (i.e. if an athlete has competed in a Senior World Championship in baseball, they are still eligible to compete in the Canada Games
The CGC Sport Committee has approved the eligibility restrictions for Triathlon in the 2021 Canada Summer Games program:
Excluded from the Canada Games are:
● Standing and Former Senior National Team Members – defined as:
Athletes who currently hold an SR, SR1, SR2 or C1 card;
Athletes who are part of (on the roster of) a standing Senior National Team (i.e. recognized as Senior National Team member regardless of event participation). – Athletes who have
been part of (on the roster of) a FORMER Senior National Team
Standing National Development Team Members – defined as:
Athletes who currently hold a Development Card; and/or Athletes who are part of (on the roster of) a standing National Development Team Member (i.e. recognized as National Development Team member regardless of event participation).
● Athletes who have previously competed at the following events:
○ Senior World Championships
○ Olympic Games
○ Commonwealth Games
○ Pan Am Games
○ FISU Games
● Athletes who have an ITU World Ranking >250 at the time of selection
