Building on our previous spotlight Series, this month’s Rudy Project ambassador is none other than 2016 Rio Gold Medalist, and former triathlon phenom turned marathon runner, Gwen Jorgensen.

Gwen Jorgensen is an American distance runner and former professional triathlete. She is the 2014 and 2015 ITU World Triathlon Series Champion and was named USA Triathlon’s 2013 and 2014 Olympic/ITU Female Athlete of the Year. Gwen was a member of the 2012 US Olympic Team and represented the United States again in triathlon at the 2016 Summer Olympics, where she won the USA’s first ever triathlon gold medal.

Jorgensen’s sports career started at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she swam and ran for the Badgers. Soon after she earned master’s degree in accounting, USA Triathlon, who was pursing her as a former swimmer and runner, encouraged her to enter the sport of triathlon.

In 2010, Jorgensen was selected as USA Triathlon’s Rookie of the year following her silver medal at the World University Triathlon Championships in Spain.

With a total of 25 gold medals and 37 podium finishes, Jorgensen has had an incredibly successful career in triathlon. She won multiple ITU triathlon records and she is the only woman to win a world title after a perfect undefeated WTS season, holding onto a 12-race WTS winning streak.

In late 2017, Jorgensen announced she would be switching her focus to marathon races, with her sights firmly set on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
