After more than five years of campaigning to be a member sport in the BC 55+ Games, Triathlon BC is thrilled to announce the successful inclusion into the annual multisport Games effective with the 2019 race season, where the Games will visit the City of Kelowna, September 10th through to 14th.

With five days of competition and surrounding cultural events, the annual 55+ BC Games attract more than 3,000 participants aged 55 and over from across the province, competing in over 30 sports.

Core triathlon events at the Games, governed under ITU rules with provincial modifications, will include a sprint triathlon (750m Swim/20km Cycle/5km Run) and duathlon (5km Run/20km Cycle/2.5km Run), with options to include peripheral events that include aquathlon, aquabike and a mixed team relay where time and resources permit.  In order to compete, athletes must be 55+ years of age as of December 31st and be Triathlon BC members.

“We are truly excited to be part of the Games, and to demonstrate our inclusive sport to the province,” said Allan Prazsky, Executive Director of Triathlon BC. “Being part of the 55+ Games allows us an opportunity to showcase our ageless, performance-minded Masters athletes within a unique, multisport atmosphere.”

“The 55+ BC Games not only casts a spotlight on British Columbia’s vibrant 55-plus population, it gives host communities the opportunity to shine.” said Lisa Beare, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture.  “Our government is proud to support the Games, which help B.C. residents stay active and engaged in their communities at any age.”

The 2017 55+ BC Games in Vernon generated an estimated $3.3 million in total economic impact, while the most recent 55+ BC Games successfully wrapped up in Cranbrook/Kimberley in September 2018.

The host cities for upcoming Games; 2020, 2021 and 2022 55 + BC Games, are the City of Richmond, Greater Victoria and Abbotsford. The BC Senior Games Society, which oversees the 55+ BC Games, anticipates each of these communities will benefit from increased tourism and economic development as well as important legacies such as trained volunteers, major event hosting experience and new or improved infrastructure.
