Welcome Athletes,

The primary purpose for this Testing Camp is to give you (the athlete) and your coach better insight to your current level of fitness and a directed way to improve upon this throughout the winter months. The specific findings that will come from this Camp should be viewed as telling you, ‘what you are doing well’ and ‘where to direct more attention in order to improve.’

The second priority is to build community throughout BC’s high-performance environment. As high-level athletes, you are among a very small percentage of the population! Being part of this exclusive group has many benefits, but also some potential drawbacks if social connections are not prioritized. Please take the time during the Camp to interact with everyone and make an attempt to be open, a leader by example, with an open mind and excited to learn and make new friends.

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • Functional Movement Gaps – at the end of the Camp you should have a clear idea of gaps in your functional movement and strength.  This includes how your movement patterns are limiting performance and how to improve those movement patterns to increase your performance.
  • Lactate Threshold Testing – You will also have information from individual Lactate Threshold (LT) testing that can be utilized to determine an appropriate training intensity to improve your performance and further build your racing engine – maximizing your time spent training.

Important steps once you have this information are to be deliberate and intentional with your training and practice, as well as a plan to have a follow up test to measure your effectiveness. Deliberate and intentional practice means bringing your best level of execution within the framework of the specific workout your coach has prescribed. When workouts are easy, they are done with intention, focus and meaning. When workouts are really hard, the intention should be to limit distractions and maximize your execution for what you have that day.

Critical Times, Places & Testing Information:

With any Camp or project, being on time and in the right location is absolutely essential. The two most important locations are the Whistler Athlete Center and Canadian Sport Institute Pacific.

  1. Whistler Athlete Centre (1080 Legacy Way) – The Whistler Athlete Center is the group accommodation, where we will meet for group activities and meals.
  2. Canadian Sport Institute Pacific -Whistler (1090 Legacy Way) – The Canadian Sport Institute Pacific is the center for all of our testing. Athletes will need to be on Campus ready to begin testing 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Testing is an extremely precise procedure so instructions and timing must be followed exactly.

Preparing For Your Lactate Testing:

  1. Complete the Informed Consent and GAQ prior to test if not done within the last 12 months (bring hardcopy to session)
    • Minors must have parent/guardian sign these documents BEFORE testing will happen
  1. Please inform us immediately if you have any ‘yes’ responses to the questions on the GAQ
    • Minors must have parent/guardian sign these documents BEFORE testing will happen
  2. Arrive 15 minutes before your first assessment so that there is time to submit forms, change clothes, use the washroom, etc.
  3. Prepare for the tests as you would a competition (i.e., rest up and fuel wisely)
    • Last big meal should be at least 3 hrs prior to the step test; light snack 1 hr prior is fine.
  4. Your incremental step test will be done on a treadmill and you will be required to give a near maximal effort
    • Bring clean, indoor running shoes and clothes you are comfortable running in
    • There is food for purchase nearby, but it’s best to come prepared with your own snacks
    • There is no eating allowed within the lab itself; drinking from a water bottle is acceptable and encouraged
    • Bring your own HR monitor if you have one and prefer to use it rather than ours
    • Showers are available for use after your testing (bring your own towel and toiletries)

Athlete Expectations: Both of these centers have ties to BC long standing high-performance culture please treat them and their staff with respect and take the time to learn about their history and the legacies they represent.  You are part of this tradition of excellence at the beginning of your journey in sport, what will your legacy be at the end of that journey?
