Triathlon BC is proud to introduce our new Athlete Development Matrix, a practical framework designed to support athletes, coaches, parents, and clubs across the province. Built to reflect the realities of triathlon in British Columbia, this resource outlines the skills, behaviours, and development priorities athletes need at each stage of their journey.

The Athlete Development Matrix is more than a checklist of performance benchmarks. It is a holistic development guide that recognizes the importance of physical, technical, tactical, psychological, emotional, and life skills in building successful athletes and strong long-term pathways in our sport.

Triathlon BC created this matrix to provide a clear, BC-specific approach to athlete development that aligns with Triathlon Canada’s long-term athlete development pathway and supports consistent, repeatable progress over time. The document reflects a thoughtful adaptation of best practices in Canadian triathlon, including important contributions from across the sport system, while remaining a distinct Triathlon BC resource built for our province’s athletes and coaches.

This matrix is intended to help coaches and athletes identify the right skills at the right time, reduce gaps in development, and support informed decision-making through every stage of the pathway. Whether an athlete is just entering the sport or progressing toward high performance, the ADM offers a shared language and framework for supporting growth, learning, and excellence.

Triathlon BC would like to acknowledge the strong culture of athlete development across Canadian triathlon, including the valuable work of Triathlon Ontario and other partners who have helped advance the conversation around athlete pathways and development frameworks in Canada.

The Athlete Development Matrix is now available for coaches, clubs, athletes, and parents to use as a resource in planning training, supporting development, and building confident, capable triathletes in British Columbia.
