In February 2023, Triathlon BC will host a warm weather cycling-specific Camp in Tucson, Arizona from February 18th through to February 26th. Tucson is a cost-effective location, renowned for its reliably dry, warm weather, and excellent cycling opportunities, featuring a broad mix of topography and terrain.
As a non-load bearing, low impact sport, cycling is an excellent way to build training volume and aerobic capacity. Through specificity to the demands of high-performance triathlon, and in consideration of the unique, age-appropriate stages of development, athletes attending the Camp can look forward to improved efficiency and enhanced skills, leading to increased competitiveness mid-season.
Through gap analysis, the need for enhanced skill development and on-bike efficiency was made evident, forming the backbone of the 2023 Camp. Each day’s session will have direct links to the demands of competition that performance pathway athletes require to be competitive in today’s racing environment.
Given the early season timing of this Camp, athletes, in consultation with their coaches, are required to meet performance and training guidelines listed below. Athletes unable to meet these targets should not attend the warm weather
TRAINING & CRITERIA
Athlete’s personal coaches will be asked for recommendations for specific athlete training prescriptions within the structure of the Camp. Opportunities for shorter distances are available during each training session. Maximum distances have been set to ensure appropriate delivery of training stimulus and prevent unnecessary mileage.
During the winter months in Canada, riding can be limited to indoor riding only. To ensure that athletes are exposed to an appropriate stimulus without a drastic increase in riding/training hours, all athletes must have a base level of fitness of 4-6 hours of bike-specific training per week, as a minimum, for the three weeks leading to the Camp (between January 9 and February 12). Athletes should be able to comfortably complete 50km at an average of 25km/h immediately prior to the Camp.
Endurance rides will be divided into age and skill appropriate groups, and have specific efforts embedded within each day’s session to target athlete needs.
Focused skill sessions will be completed as a group to facilitate greater learning opportunities. These skill sessions will consist of very low volume bouts of intensity, coupled with adequate rest to prevent interfering with the Camp’s endurance theme.
In the event of in-ride mechanicals, each endurance ride will feature sag support with a full complement of spares.
Supplemental run and swim sessions will be supervised by a coach. Athletes with specific training programs will be requested to share these plans with Camp staff to ensure safety and ensure the focus of quality bike training is maintained. Swim and run sessions should be viewed as recovery or short easy workouts only.
