Marc Duncan competed for Canada at the 1991 World Championship in Australia. He was an enthusiastic and committed athlete who, tragically, died in a house fire in the spring of 1993 at the age of 20.

Following a meaningful contribution to the Marc Duncan Bursary in 2025, the annual disbursement amount was increased to further support emerging athletes in British Columbia who are pursuing the performance pathway and demonstrating strong potential as they advance toward national and international competition.

After extensive review with key stakeholders, including Marc’s father, the following guidelines have been established for the administration of the Marc Duncan Fund:

  • Triathlon BC will award up to $5,000.00, with a minimum payout of $2,500.00 each year.
  • At its discretion, Triathlon BC can choose to award multiple candidate(s) with a one-time payment.
  • Triathlon BC may elect not to disburse funds in any given year if applicants are deemed suitably unqualified.
  • The Review Committee will include, at minimum, the Executive Director, one Board member, and one representative from BC’s performance pathway community.
  • The bursary is awarded as a one-time payment. Only one award can be received by a member athlete.

Eligible athletes must meet the following criteria:

  • 16 to 23 years of age as of December 31 of the year of the Award.
  • Be a member in good standing of Triathlon BC for more than one year.
  • Be a CSI-P enrolled athlete in the year of the award.
  • Athlete must not be receiving Sport Canada (AAP/Carding) funding.
  • Be a resident of BC.
  • Be a Canadian Citizen or Landed Immigrant.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to ongoing education.
  • Demonstrate dedication to the performance pathway by way of provincial, national or international ranking.

 Application Process

Interested applicants are invited to submit a letter of application outlining how they meet the established criteria. Applications must also include a formal endorsement from Triathlon Canada’s High Performance Director, a National Team coach, or an NCCP-accredited provincial performance pathway triathlon coach, confirming the athlete’s competitive achievements and future potential.
