Building on the momentum created in 2022, Triathlon BC is thrilled to offer a record-breaking number of World Championship qualifying events to the 2023 race calendar. Age group athletes will have the opportunity to earn the right to represent the esteemed Red and White colors of Triathlon Canada’s National Age Group Teams in nine different disciplines next year; Aquabike, Cross Triathlon, Duathlon and Sprint, Standard, Long Distance Triathlon, and new for 2023, the Mixed Team Relay World Championships, which should be an incredibly exciting event to watch, and even more fun to participate in!

“The opportunity to represent Canada at a major World Championship is truly unique in the world of sport. Whether you are 22 years old or 72 years old, the chance of competing against the World’s best wearing the Maple Leaf is what memories are made of!” exclaimed Allan Prazsky, Executive Director of Triathlon BC. ‘Let’s see how many BC athletes we can get to the start line in 2024!”

The Canadian Age Group World Championship Teams consist of top performing age-group athletes in Canada who earn a spot at a Qualification Race to represent Canada on the international stage at the World Triathlon (WT) Championships. Team members have the opportunity to proudly represent their country, participate in a unique team environment and celebrate their sport within the global triathlon community. The age-group team is one hundred percent self-funded.

Held in a different location every year, the World Championships events attract thousands of like-minded age group athletes from around the globe, and mark the end of the season for elite athletes and age group competitors alike.

What do you need to know about qualifying for Age Group World Championship Events? Athletes are responsible for the following:

  • You must be a current, annual member of Triathlon BC or a member of another Provincial Sport Organization (PSO) prior to competition.
  • Expression of Interest (EOI) must be submitted to Triathlon Canada with a non-refundable athlete fee paid prior to competition.
  • An Expression of Interest (EOI) page will be set up by Triathlon Canada specific to each province with the list of qualification events. Learn more about how to submit an EOI.

What do you need to know about Age Groups?

1.) British Columbia has a record number of qualifiers in 2023; 12 unique qualifying opportunities are available throughout the season, the most in Canada! Qualifying spots are offered in 5-year age groups e.g. women 40-44, men 45-49 etc.

Note: Race Day standings do not mean you have a qualifying spot in your age category.

2.) Qualifying spots are AGE ADJUSTED to December 31st, 2023. If there is one qualifying spot per age group, per gender, the fastest finishing athlete as of age adjusted results that has submitted an expression of interest will then be considered an ‘automatic qualifier’.

3.) Automatic qualifiers will be notified by Triathlon Canada directly. If you believe you have qualified and do not receive a notification within one month, please contact agegroupteams@triathloncanada.com.

4.) Skip over to Triathlon Canada’s Expression of Interest to indicate your interest to wear the Maple Leaf in the 2023 World Championships!

Note 1:  With limited age group qualifying spots available throughout Canada, expect events to fill early.  Early registration, where available, is recommended.

Note 2:  To be eligible to secure a World Championship spot, athletes must be members of their provincial triathlon association (i.e. Triathlon BC) PRIOR to competing in the qualifying event.

Note 3:  Age-groups are categorized according to gender and 5-year age brackets (i.e. 20-24, 25-29, 30 – 34 etc.)

Note 4:  If an event has 3 qualifying spots per age group, the top 3 athletes of each gender with a valid annual provincial and Triathlon Canada membership for each age-adjusted age category are qualifiers. Similarly, if an event has 1 qualifying spot, only the first athlete of each gender and age category will qualify.
