VICTORIA—Joe Morissette will be counted on to play an integral role in building on a strong foundation already established at Triathlon Canada to shape an even brighter future for the Canadian triathletes as the national sport organization’s new chief executive officer.

After an extensive national search in cooperation with our provincial sport organizations and funding partners, Triathlon Canada’s Board of Directors found its new leader on the badminton court in the Canadian sport system. Morissette will transition to the helm of a new summer sport after serving as executive director of Badminton Canada for the last eight years.

“I am tremendously excited for this new challenge. The organization is coming from a solid position under the previous leadership. I am looking forward to bringing my experience and skillset to further develop the organization towards an even more promising future while working closely with our provincial sport organizations and clubs across the country,” said Morissette.

Under Morissette’s leadership, Badminton Canada experienced exceptional growth and development both on and off court. On court, Badminton Canada developed into a dominant force in the Pan Am region and qualified its largest team ever for the Tokyo Olympic Games, and first ever athlete for the Tokyo Paralympic Games. Off court, Badminton Canada experienced significant alignment with its provincial and territorial partners, tremendous growth with annual revenue increasing by more than 300 per cent since 2013. This revenue generation strategy resulted in increased programs, services and international events hosted in Canada each year.

“Joe is a highly-motivated, passionate leader who brings the energy, drive and skillset required to lead our organization with a focus on achieving excellence at all levels of the sport, both on and off the field of play,” said Peter McCrory, president, Triathlon Canada. “He is a proven performer who brings a unique mix of experience, leadership qualities and an understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing a national sport organization in Canada. I know Joe is driven to succeed in steering our sport’s future and we are excited to have him lead our team.”

Prior to joining Badminton Canada, Morissette held management positions with the Canada Winter Games in Halifax (2009-2011) and with USports from 2005-2009 (formerly Canadian Interuniversity Sport).

Working with Triathlon Canada’s network of provincial sport partners, Morissette is committed to leading with a continued focus on delivering the tools Canada’s triathletes and coaches, from the grassroots to elite levels, required to deliver podium performances.

“I am looking forward to meeting with the staff, our athletes and coaches across the country along with our provincial sport partners and clubs. To be successful, we must be working shoulder-to-shoulder with each other towards a common vision with shared values to grow the sport in Canada while investing in developing the athlete pipeline that will ultimately deliver more Olympic and Paralympic podium performances for Canada,” added Morissette. “It is my goal to build trust and confidence with all of our stakeholders while working to continue to growing Triathlon Canada’s finances to meet the organization’s demands.”

Fully bilingual, Morissette also serves as the vice-president (PAN AM) on the Board of Directors of the Association Francophone de Badminton as well as sits on the USports International Committee.

He will split his time working out of Ottawa’s House of Sport and Triathlon Canada’s head office in Victoria beginning on May 18.
