World Championship Qualifiers, BC Championships, SuperSeries & BC Summer Games Qualifier Bids Now Open – Submission deadline, October 9th!

Creating a world class athlete experience is a priority for Triathlon BC, both to ensure growth for our sport, and, with a saturated event market place, ensure athletes return, time and time again, to a sport we know and love.

Due to the changing climate-related conditions in our province and across the world, Triathlon BC’s policies governing the environment are under review, and will be updated in the 2024 Sanction Package, continuing our emphasis on participant safety.

‘Sanctioned by Triathlon BC’ is a designation that indicates an event has met the minimum requirements established by Triathlon BC for safety and fairness at a competition. It signifies that a Race Director has completed a thorough review of an event’s swim, bike and run courses, has evaluated and planned for medical, emergency, safety and volunteer support, and that the Race Director will conduct the event according to the rules and regulations governed by World Triathlon, Triathlon Canada and Triathlon BC. Sanctioned events have continuous technical support and professional guidance and advice where required.

Events sanctioned by Triathlon BC have the following objectives:

  • Safe and fair competition.
  • NEW – Adhere to policies governing environmental conditions
  • Strong partnership between the LOC and Triathlon BC.
  • Inclusion of paratriathlon events to support participation and growth of paratriathlon in the province.
  • Inclusion of age-group competition from kids to adult to grow multisport across the province.
  • Development of the sport and maximize exposure for triathlon.
  • Provide competitive opportunities that support long-term athlete development.
  • Encourage performance pathway athletes to remain in the province to experience formidable competition.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIERS: Triathlon Canada distributes a limited number of opportunities to qualify for the World Championships each year.  Events across Canada bid to host qualifying events in each discipline, wherein the top finishers in each gender and across each age category qualify to represent Canada at the following year’s World Championships.  Events awarded with National Championship status automatically earn multiple age group qualifier spots. Truly a unique experience for athletes around the globe! Triathlon Canada fees are associated with hosting, and are based on the discipline being selected.

BC Championship Events:  Participation is gender-based, age-categories (e.g., 20-24, 25-29 etc.). The first-place finisher of each age category receives the honour of being awarded the Provincial Championship title in their respective discipline, gender and age-category.  High quality Gold, Silver and Bronze Provincial Champions medals are provided to all podium age group finishers.

Mixed Team Relay: The Triathlon Team Mixed Relay format showcases racing at its most thrilling! All four athletes on a team must complete a super-sprint triathlon – before tagging off to a teammate (typically, the athlete order is male-female-male-female).

BC SuperSeries: The SuperSeries is a critical step in performance-oriented Youth, Junior and U23 development. SuperSeries events may include individual super-sprint, sprint and mixed team-relay triathlons, in addition to small-footprint MadMoto style events. All events must offer closed course, draft legal competition.  Points Series tracking, overall prizing and medals are provided by Triathlon BC.

BC Games Qualifiers: An entry into the performance pathway, the BC Games take place every two years and call on some 4,000 athletes from across BC.  In 2024, athletes between the ages of 14 and 16 are eligible to compete in the Games.

All bids received will be reviewed by Triathlon BC’s Sub- Committee. To allow for adequate planning, Events that are awarded with a BC Championship or SuperSeries designation will be announced on or before, November 1st, 2023.
