BC Summer Games

2026 BC Summer Games
Location: Kelowna July 22-26th
Ages: 14–15 (birth years 2011 and 2012)

Every two years the top triathletes from across the province get to experience the BC Summer Games. These Games offer a full slate of events, including an Aquathlon, Duathlon, Triathlon, Relay and F1 Triathlon for youth athletes.

Age Group Note: 2026 games will return to the original 14-15 age group.

Athletes

Catering to performance-oriented young athletes, the BC Summer Games attracts the best athletes from every corner of the province. Taking place over several days, the Games offer five different competition events. In order to compete at the Games, athletes must be members of Triathlon BC prior to selection, and qualify based on the criteria listed for each zone.

Event Distances:

  • Super Sprint Triathlon – 400m swim/ 10km bike/ 2.5km run
  • Mixed Relay Event –  (3x or 4x) 200 m swim / 2.5 km bike / 1 km run
  • Duathlon – 1km run/ 7.5km bike/ 1km run
  • F1 Triathlon – 200 m swim / 2.5 km bike / 1km run
  • Aquathlon –  300m swim/1km run

Coaches

There will be one Head Coach and one Assistant Coach per zone. Zone teams that include both male and female athletes, must have a Coach and Assistant Coach of the opposite gender. Each zone is required to have a Head Coach.

In an effort to ensure equal participation and representation from all areas of the province, the BC Games has divided the province into eight Zones; Kootenays (Zone 1), Thompson-Okanagan (Zone 2), Fraser Valley (Zone 3), Fraser River (Zone 4), Vancouver-Coastal (Zone 5), Vancouver Island-Central Coast (Zone 6), North West (Zone 7), North East (Zone 8).

WHY SHOULD I PARTICIPATE IN THE BC GAMES?

The BC Summer Games are a unique and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. These Multi-sport Games are different from a single-sport competition and have additional distractions that a single-sport environment does not provide. These Games also help participants prepare for higher level multi-sport Games like Canada Summer Games. Triathlon events at the BC Summer Games are very similar to those at Canada Summer Games. Athletes are offered the chance to compete in a mixed relay, and draft legal environment.

HOW OLD DO I HAVE TO BE TO COMPETE IN TRIATHLON AT THE BC SUMMER GAMES?

Athletes competing at the 2026 BC summer games are between 14–15 (birth years 2011 and 2012)

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO PARTICIPATE IN TRIATHLON AT THE BC SUMMER GAMES?

The BC Summer Games registration fee is $175 per athlete. This registration fee covers the cost of travel to/from, and while at the Games, meals and accommodation, your competition, special events, and entertainment, including opening and closing ceremonies. Athletes who wish to participate in triathlon will also incur additional charges to cover costs associated with a custom BC Games racing suit and t-shirt.

CAN PARENTS COME TO WATCH ME COMPETE AT THE BC SUMMER GAMES?

All competitions are open to the public and are free of charge. Your friends and family are welcome to come and cheer you on and see you at your sport venue. Only Games participants are permitted access to the accommodation sites, food venues, Games transportation, and special events. The Opening and Closing Ceremonies are also open to the public and there is no admission fee; however, space may be limited and a ticketing process may be implemented.

Youth & Junior Events

Youth and Junior Events (formerly known as Triathlon Canada's Kids of Steel (KOS) program) are aimed at athletes under the age of 19. Events catering to this age group have an overarching objective of providing a guideline for youth development, with critical details found below.

Youth & Junior Events Espouse:

  • Healthy, active living – triathlon as a lifestyle sport
  • Lifelong participation – recreation and competitive streams; developmentally appropriate training
  • Safety – distance and equipment regulations
  • Fun – enjoyment of sport, celebration of personal excellence and camaraderie

  • The foundations underlying all programs are based on sound theory, encompassing:
  • Comprehensive research in youth sport
  • Physiological, psychological and social growth development patterns
  • Maturational issues
  • National sport development models
  • Olympic values

External School Sports Credit Program

If you are a high-school-aged athlete, member of Triathlon BC, and have fulfilled the minimum eligibility for any of the approved programs listed below, please contact Triathlon BC to request a letter confirming your participation and to earn high school graduating credits!

Athlete 10 – Zone Select Team

Athlete 12 –  Provincial Team – Nationals, Junior National Development Team or U23
National Development Team

Age/Distance Rules (Maximum)

There are specific rules that apply to youth events to maximize safety, inclusion and participation. Important equipment rules are highlighted below.

Under 7 to 11 years
  • No aerobars permitted
  • SPD Style Clipless pedals permitted (recessed cleat, entry on both sides of pedal required)
  • Wheels: minimum 16 spokes, 2.4mm maximum spoke depth, metal rim, 25mm maximum rim depth, 23C minimum tire width
  • Recommended Gearing: 42 x 16 (7&U), 42 x 16 (8-9), 46 x 16 (10-11)
12 to 15 years
  • No aerobars permitted
  • All clipless pedal systems permitted
  • Wheels: minimum 16 spokes, 2.4mm maximum spoke depth, metal rim, 25mm maximum rim depth, 23C minimum tire width
  • Recommended Gearing: 46 x 14 (12-13), 50 x 14 (14-15)
16 to 19 years
  • All clipless pedal systems permitted
  • Wheels: most race wheels permitted as per UCI rules. 60mm maximum rim depth.
  • Recommended Gearing: 52 x 14

Age/Distance Rules (Maximum)

Event distance regulations promote skill acquisition, speed, and inclusion (everyone can finish). Listed distances are MAXIMUM distances in each sport. Athletes can compete in shorter divisions or lower age groups, but, in accordance with Triathlon Canada regulations, may NOT race up in age or distance.

1-2-Tri Go

1-2 Tri Go is a Learn to Triathlon program that is geared for children and youth. The program can be used in both school and club settings and can be adapted to the ability of the participants. Once registered for our 1-2-Tri Go program, you will receive access to several resources that will assist you in starting your 1-2-Tri Go program.

How to implement the 1-2 Tri Go program?

The program is available to schools and triathlon clubs.

Schools may implement the 1-2-Tri Go program as a Physical Activity curriculum, or as an after school program. The program can be set up to be a weekly coached session, or a self directed program. Each school can make that decision.

Triathlon clubs may offer the program as a weekly program similar to their adult training session.

Attending Triathlon Races

A very important aspect of the 1-2-Tri Go program is participating in a race.  Participating in a race provides the athlete the opportunity to monitor their skill progress.  Participating in several small races throughout the training season, or attending one bigger race at the end of the season are both excellent opportunities for the athlete.  Schools and Clubs may choose to host their own races, or they may choose for their athletes to attend a race hosted in the community.

National Sport Trust Fund

Triathlon BC’s Pool to Podium program has been created to bring high performance athletes from a provincial level to an international performance standard. These athletes have been identified as meeting and/or exceeding strict eligibility criteria. It brings together top tier athlete support, advanced coaching, intensive training, and international caliber competition opportunities. Donations made to the Pool to Podium program will be used to offset the cost of facility rentals, routine health and wellness screening, physiological testing and assessment, training, travel and cost of competitions for developing young athletes on the cusp of making our National Team.
